The Sky Harbor additional resources installation is one of that many that have garnered local and national recognition. At the opening, a presentation by NTMA executive director Richard Bruns to Tamie Fisher, the City of Phoenix Acting Aviation Director, commemorated the project’s achievement of Job of the Year, the terrazzo industry’s highest honor. The project was selected from among 52 terrazzo projects nationwide based on design, scope, and craftsmanship. A 10-foot-long, hands-on model showing the step-by-step installation of terrazzo lets visitors experience each stage, from rough stone to the gleaming finished product. The exhibit takes visitors behind-the-scenes to the construction site, from the planning and design stages to the method used to transfer the design to the floor, to pouring the aggregates, to the final fine polish. Several different media recount the process, from photos, design drawings, and computerized models, to written and audio narratives of those involved, and an eight-minute documentary video.

You have just bought yourself a few pieces ofhandmade rugs, which, according to the lady at the store is “specially made”. All you know is that each and every rug has a distinct design and color scheme, that each floor décor has various sizes and shapes, and that they can be in plain or multi-colored. Also, you are just made aware of how you should clean and maintain your area rugs and, other than that you know nothing else. It is said that if you understand where a particular rug design has come from or what the symbol on it stands for, it means you already have the capacity to decipher the hidden message.

Third, the potter must have time available to prepare, shape and fire the clay into pottery. Even after control of fire was achieved, humans did not seem to develop pottery until a sedentary life was achieved. It has been hypothesized that pottery was developed only after humans established agriculture, which led to permanent settlements. However, the oldest known pottery is from the Czech Republic and dates to 28,000 BC, at the height of the ice age, long before the beginnings of agriculture. Biscuit refers to the clay after the object is shaped to the desired form and fired in the kiln for the first time, known as “bisque fired” or “biscuit fired”. Mineral components of the clay body will undergo chemical and physical changes that will change the material.

The last large-scale application before its demise in the face of environmental clean air restrictions was in the production of salt-glazed sewer-pipes. Glaze is a glassy coating on pottery, the primary purposes of which are decoration and protection. One important use of glaze is to render porous pottery vessels impermeable to water and other liquids. Glaze may be applied by dusting the unfired composition over the ware or by spraying, dipping, trailing or brushing on a thin slurry composed of the unfired glaze and water.
